How EAP can help your business

Strong evidence base supports the positive impact of EAPs on workplace outcomes. Research shows improved presenteeism, reduced absenteeism, lower workplace distress, and gains in engagement and productivity following EAP use. Studies also link EAP access to better mental health outcomes, including reduced anxiety and depression, contributing to stronger employee retention and overall workforce sustainability.

Improved presenteeism

In a dataset of 85,432 cases, EAP counselling was linked to strong productivity and engagement gains. Participants regained nearly 40 hours of productive time per month, 77 percent recovered from anxiety, 86 percent from depression, and low work engagement reduced from 33 percent to 24 percent after support.

Reduce Absenteeism

Research consistently shows that EAP counselling significantly reduces absenteeism. In large scale studies, average monthly hours missed dropped by around 50 - 70%, from approximately 7.4 hours to 3.9 hours after support. Similarly, absenteeism reduced from 7.9 to 4.3 hours per employee following EAP use, with problematic absenteeism decreasing from 32 percent to 17 percent.

Workplace distress Improvements

Workplace distress improved significantly after EAP use, with distress levels decreasing from 26 percent to 18 percent and overall distress scores showing clear, positive change across the sample.

Staff Retention

A 2025 study of more than 15,000 employees found that those with access to an EAP were significantly less likely to want to leave their job. Even after accounting for age, gender and other factors, EAP access was linked to lower turnover intention, with the results showing strong statistical significance.

Improved Mental Health/Life Satisfaction

Large scale outcome data show strong improvements in wellbeing following EAP support. One global analysis found a large positive effect on life satisfaction, with those reporting significant life satisfaction problems decreasing from 38 percent before counselling to 17 percent after. In very large case samples of over 85,000 cases, EAP counselling was also associated with recovery rates of 77 percent for clinical anxiety and 86 percent for clinical depression, demonstrating meaningful improvements in core mental health outcomes and overall employee wellbeing.
